Winter 2009 Newsletter Canadianpond.ca Products Ltd.
New web site : www.canadiandponds.ca
Greetings Friends and Pond Lovers,
After a long break we are finally back to writing our seasonal newsletters to let you know what’s new at Canadianpond.ca, what’s new in the world of pond management and what’s new with our website.
At Canadianpond.ca we are having a blow-out pre-Boxing day sale for the entire month of December! Deals include in stock only, floating fountains, floating islands and bacteria so check out the details online at our new website: www.canadiandponds.ca
Speaking about our new website, please visit and let us know what you think. We have been working on this for the past year and it should be transactional by the Spring. We’ve traded in the funky product pages for a more sleek and standard look that is easier to navigate. We have a new information section where you can read up on relevant pond topics, and as always we can respond to you via phone or email through our Pond Needs form. Feel free to give us constructive criticism if you have a chance. You may notice the original website is still online, this will be so until the new site is transactional.
What’s new in the world of pond management? We have had a busy 2009 season. Some of the top problems involved blue green algae and nuisance aquatic weeds. Here is some advice about each topic:
Blue-Green Algae
Cyannobacteria has been persistent on the planet since the beginning of time so for starters it is best to get use to the inconvenience of it, rather than get obsessed and sell your property over it. However for private pond owners we offer a prevention, a solution and a treatment:
Prevention
-All pond owners must attend to the immediate watersheds of their ponds. This means protecting the shoreline by leaving 5–10 meters of grass un-mowed so that plant roots can absorb surface runoff. Try not to apply fertilizer, compost etc. within 10 m of the shoreline. Provide some shade trees on the south side of the pond to keep pond water somewhat shaded throughout the day.
Solution
-Over the long run, install a lake bottom aeration system and use beneficial bacteria that consume the sludge on the pond floor. This is where the excess nutrients like phosphorous are stored and released when the conditions are right (pH, temperature, etc.) for an algae bloom’s success. Cyannobacteria are particularly abundant in situations where excess phosphorous are present. Combination of aeration and bacteria are the only solutions we know of to address the cumulative effects of nutrient loading from decades of surface runoff.
Treatment
-Consider using a spot treatment of Polypro to kill cyannobacteria. It is an algaecide that when used in the correct dosage, will not harm fish or plants, but will kill the cyannobacteria. Read the label carefully and follow instructions correctly. Not suitable for ponds with koi or goldfish. Best used in the presence of aeration and beneficial bacteria. This is not a long term solution like using bacteria in combination with aeration.
Aquatic Weeds
As surface waters change in chemistry due to global warming, it would appear the habitat for fauna is being replaced by a habitat for flora. In other words, very generally speaking we can expect fewer diverse species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish, and mammals and more aggressive invasive plant species. For us this means, beaches that are weedy, diving from the end of the dock into cool water is now replaced by diving into an underwater grove of slimy stalks, or the nice shallow waters where we hunted for minnows is full of plants we never saw before. What can a pond owner do?
Prevention
Avoiding aquatic weeds can be difficult to prevent except at the onset of pond design where shallow waters can be planted densely with indigenous aquatic plants (helpful plants) rather than leave space for plants you don’t want (invasive non-indigenous plants).
Preventing the spread of invasive aquatic weeds is similar to weeding in the garden, you have to keep weeding them out by hand or weeding with the Weed Rake and/or Weed Razer.
Solution
The best solution we know again is to use the combination of lake bottom aeration and bacteria treatments. Over time this will remove the nutrients that feed the aquatic weeds, thereby weakening their food source, and hopefully killing them slowly. The act of preventing more nutrients from entering the pond is even more important. Having said this, it is extremely difficult to remove weeds once they are well established.
Treatment
We are constantly on the look out for ecological methods to deal with nuisance aquatic weeds. If you know of anything please let us know so we can serve you better. For cattails, we suggest removing the brown seed heads before they pop, and all other weeds, just get in the pond and pull them out!

KOENDERS WINDMILLS Windmills built by Koenders have an extremely efficient direct drive system that transfers energy simply and effectively with very few moving parts. This friction reduction results in a windmill that is more reliable, efficient and of course windmill maintenance is thereby greatly reduced which means your investment maintains value. The compressor is the heart of any windmill aeration system for ponds and lakes and a Koenders Windmill has a sealed ball-bearing crankshaft that is attached and rotated by the large surface area blades.A low wind velocity will suffice to initiate blade rotation which will transfer energy from the ultra-strong crankshaft to the connecting rod which has one or two diaphragms connected to it .
