Green mineral product used to clear water from a clay bottom pond.

A pond with clay bottom has almost never clear water due to its high rate of mineral particles in suspension. By their positive ion charge, the particles repel each other and cannot settle to the bottom. This phenomenon makes the water in this type of pond opaque and colored (gray or brown). The sunlight can not penetrate deeply and this affects the aquatic life of the pond. Also, it only takes a small stirring at the bottom to have the clay particles resuspended in the water column. There are solutions!

Green mineral product used to clear water from a clay bottom pond

A clay bottom pond almost never has clear water because of its high concentration of suspended particles. Given their positive ion charge, the particles repel each other therefore; have difficulty settling at the bottom of the pond. This makes the pond water opaque and coloured (gray). The aquatic life in the pond is affected because the sun’s beneficial rays cannot penetrate the water column of the pond. Also, it only takes a small amount of turbulence at the bottom to suspend again the clay particles that had managed to settle at the bottom (as infrequent as this may be).

CanadianPonds.ca has a new product for this pond problem that will clarify the water: CLAYAWAY™. According to the chemical composition of your water, ClayAway™ may not be the right product. In this case, another product, aluminum sulfate (see
PhosClear) can be used. We suggest testing a small sample of your water and in both cases, these products do not change the pH and other water features. They are safe for the environment, residents and users of the pond.

Calcium sulfate contains charged particles of negative ions that attract particles of clay,. The particles of clay will cling to the particles of calcium sulfate adding weight and volume to the particles. Given their new increased weight and a neutralized electric charge, the particles should precipitate to the bottom of the pond and stay there through a process called flocculation. Tests conducted on the treated water showed that after stirring the water, the flocculated particles suspended in the water returned to the bottom quickly (within 1 to 3 hours).

In our laboratories, the results of the initial treatment were visible after about 6 hours after application and the water was clear 24 hours later. The reaction time of your pond may vary but you should see changes after 24 hours and the water should be clear after a week.

Technical Information

Dosage:

Use between 450 kilograms (1000lbs) and 900 kilograms (2000lbs) of ClayAway™ per acre of surface area. The pond should be treated in full. It is not possible to treat only a portion of the pond.

To test the dosage necessary for your pond, use a sample of pond water and give the lowest concentration that flocculated clay particles within 12 hours after application.

Application:

The ClayAway™ powder comes in bags of 22.5 kilos (50lbs). The goal is to distribute as evenly as possible the necessary dose over the entire surface of the pond. The sulfate particles will fall to the bottom where they are dispersed. They will not spread into the water with the current therefore; will not be distributed throughout the pond on their own.

As for its application, there are several methods:

Small Ponds / Lakes

1. Dry spray using a dry powder duster or a simple broadcasting seeder. It is also possible to throw handfuls of powder across the pond.

2. Liquid spray is done by mixing at least three parts of water per one part of ClayAway™. The use of a liquid spray can be done but be careful not to clog the pipes.

Large Lakes:

A spray-type "Hydro-Seeding" is recommended. It can also be done with your motor boat along with the swirls made by the latter. A leaf blower could be used also to blow the content of a bag onto the surface of the water (use a mask and protection during application for safety)

Tip:
Some customers are very creative! They spread the calcium sulfate on the entire surface of the ice on the pond during the winter. When spring comes and melts the ice, the calcium sulphate will settle evenly into the water.

Positive / negative effects:

- With clear water, you and your fish can see each other for the first time!
- There will be accumulation of mineral sediments at the bottom of the pond. These sediments are not organic so will not cause algae problems but if the dose used is higher than recommended, the surplus could create sediment at the bottom of the pond that providing a muddy texture which is unpleasant for swimming and could also clog some drains or pipes.
- When water clears up, the sun will go and reach the bottom of the pond faster which can stimulate the growth of aquatic plants. These plants are beneficial for the health of your pond because they provide oxygen and filter the water.
